French Drain Work

Welcome to the part of my web site that covers how I and my father-in-law installed a french drain (or foundation drain) at my house in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. I hope that this series of pictures and commentary helps to explain how we were able to do this work. Please feel free to check out the rest of my home improvements that are located elsewhere on our web site.

Heating oil tank in the way. See how we removed the tank safely and inexpensively.

Trench from house to the rear of the lot for drain pipes. This is some 75 feet from the house. I dug this trench using only shovel, matic, or axe except for a couple of roots which were so huge that I had to use a chain saw to cut through them. Yes, I ruined the chain saw chain when I did it.

The trench reached depths of nearly 5 feet.
